The Walk: A walk from the fabulous sandy beach at West Wittering, along the shore of Chichester Harbour, to the sailing village of Itchenor.

Why do it: Impressive West Wittering Beach, with views across the Solent to the Isle of Wight. Optional excursion around East Head, a dune covered sand spit which is an SSSI in the care of the National Trust. Birdlife along the shore at low tide, including Ella Nore Spit reserve. Views over Chichester Harbour and towards Bosham Harbour across the Chichester Channel at Itchenor, a nice spot to watch the nautical activity around the marina and out on the water.

Distance: 4 miles out and 4 miles back = 8 miles total (excluding 2 mile optional circuit around East Head)
Logistics: Start at the large West Wittering Beach car park (charge - at peak season, check on line, preference may be given to pre-booked tickets). Walk the coast path to Itchenor and back. At low tide, it is possible to add variety by walking along the foreshore below the High Water Mark.
Challenges: West Wittering is a popular beach in season, but you should leave the crowds behind. Watch the tide if walking on the foreshore. The foreshore is rocky and muddy in places.
Refreshments: Beach Cafe in the car park at West Wittering. Several cafes and pubs in Itchenor.
