The Walk: A walk along the beach from Pagham via Bognor Regis to Elmer. Also an optional circuit of the Eastern Spit of Pagham Harbour.
Map
NB The map shows my GPS track, with various diversions and excursions which you may not wish to follow precisely.
Why do it: Bracing beach walk, interrupted by seaside jollity at Bognor Regis. At low tide, a large beach of soggy sand is exposed at Bognor, belying the shingly image of the resort, and allowing one almost to forget the proximity to a heavily developed coastal town. Elmer Rock Islands (built to provide forward sea defences, they have created an unusual sequence of man-made bays). Along Pagham Spit, open skies and birds of Pagham Harbour, shifting shingle formations.

Distance: 8 miles from Pagham to Elmer. Optional 2 mile circuit of Pagham Harbour spit.
Logistics: Park in the free car park at Pagham. Bus back from Elmer. Note, a car park which formerly existed on Pagham Spit is closed due to a dispute over public access rights.
Challenges: Low tide is best to expose a large if rather soggy sandy beach which is easier to walk on than the shingle above high water mark. It also makes it easier to climb over breakwaters (they are less high at the seaward end). There are also some rocky sea defences to negotiate.
Refreshments: Cafe in Pagham. Many cafes etc along the front at Bognor Regis. Pub at Elmer.
