Shoreham to Worthing

The Walk: Starting from Shoreham Fort overlooking the entrance to Shoreham Harbour, the walk goes along the Shoreham, Lancing and Worthing sea fronts and/or the beach, ending at the Canadian War Memorial. Return to Shoreham by bus. There is a final short walk along the Adur back to the start.

Map

NB The map shows my GPS track, with various diversions and excursions which you may not wish to follow precisely. Main route in BLUE, walk beside the Adur in RED

Why do it: Victorian Shoreham Fort. Ships and boats coming and going at Shoreham Harbour. Shoreham Beach Nature Reserve, noted for  'vegetated shingle'. Large mainly shingly beach. Sedate Worthing sea front and Pier. Iconic, glass-sided Adur Ferry Footbridge spanning the Adur.

Distance: Main walk 8 miles plus walk back along Adur 2 miles = 10 miles in total

Logistics: Start at the car park at Shoreham Fort (charge). Get the bus back from Worthing Canadian Memorial, alighting at Shoreham High Street. Walk back to the start over the Adur Ferry Footbridge and along the Adur shore path through the new waterside development.

Challenges: The path along the sea fronts is mainly along good paths or tarmac promendade, sometimes busy with strollers and close to traffic. To make it more interesting, my route stays on the beach where possible (see blue track on the map in satellite view). The beach is mainly shingle and therefore can be quite heavy going, so the walk will be best at low tide to make the most of the shallower shingle lying on firmer sand exposed in the intertidal zone.  The beach has wooden and rock breakwaters which must be scrambled over, which is easier at low tide since the seaward end of the breakwaters is generally lower. For these reasons, doing the walk around low tide gives more options.

Refreshments: Coffee shack in the Shoreham Fort Car Park. Perch Cafe on Lancing Beach. Numerous cafes etc along the front at Worthing , on Worthing Pier, and Shoreham High Street
